Based on a true story from France's Reign of Terror, Beethoven's only opera tells the powerful story of a woman, in disguise as a young man, who goes to work in a dismal prison to liberate her husband, a political prisoner. With highlights that include the first-act quarted, powerhouse arias for soprano and tenor, and the Prisoner's Chorus, the score fully expresses the opera's lofty themes of unwavering loyalty, freedom, and love.

A modernist thriller set in late 17th-century Paris during a time of unsolved murders, Cardillac is based on a tale by ETA Hoffmann. Cardillac is a goldsmith whose works are in demand by Paris's wealthy and fashionable. The nobility's desire to possess Cardillac's work is no match for his obsessive need to be reunited with his treasured creations; he will go to any length to get them back. Sanford Sylvan brings his "creamy baritone" and "formidable dramatic presence" (Opera) to this suspenseful and unsettling drama.

Described by Donizetti scholar William Ashbrook as "one of the most unfairly neglected of Donizetti's mature operas," Maria Padilla is a tour de force loosely based on the life of a woman who secretly married King Pedro the Cruel of Castile. In this new production, beloved soprano Barbara Quintiliani returns to a role she triumphed in at the 2009 Wexford Festival. In her Ireland debut: "the evening belonged, thrilling and unequivocally, to Barbara Quintiliani as Maria. . . She has a remarkable range of colors at her disposal, her coloratura is superbly executed. . . She also has one of the rarest qualities: an innate understanding of how to build this music to a thrilling climax, with superb high notes" (Opera News)
