Mission and Vision

Mission

Opera Boston is a professional opera company dedicated to offering engaging musical productions of outstanding quality that connect audience and performer. Opera Boston presents innovative repertoire choices and important but rarely performed works. Opera Boston enriches the community through inventive outreach and education programs and by keeping opera affordable.

Vision

To experience great opera is to enjoy one of life’s greatest theatrical adventures. This extraordinary fusion of all the arts — music, theatre, dance, and the visual arts, interpreted through the intensity and beauty of the human voice, possesses the power to inspire and enchant, illuminating the depth of human emotion. Opera Boston is dedicated to creating this dynamic synergy between opera audiences, composers, and performing artists by presenting engaging, theatrical performances that draw the audience into a deeper appreciation of great operatic music.

By emphasizing innovative repertoire choices and important but rarely performed works, Opera Boston features works that were masterpieces in their own time, and also presents the new masterpieces of our time. Productions encompass opera, operetta, and musical theatre and, in order to foster a love of opera in children and young adults, each year the company presents a family opera. Innovative production concepts are tailored to the intimacy of the Cutler Majestic Theatre, Boston’s finest surviving opera house. Opera Boston draws upon the city’s outstanding pool of artistic talent, and introduces new artists to the city.

Opera Boston believes that opera is a contemporary art form, and aims to present innovative special events that make opera matter. The Opera Unlimited Festival is dedicated to presenting 20th and 21st century chamber opera, and the commissioning of new work. The outdoor opera program brings free performances to thousands of Boston’s residents by staging imaginative performances of operettas and musicals in new spaces, such as its past performances on historic maritime vessels like the U.S.S. Constitution and the U.S.S. Cassin Young.

Opera Boston’s education and outreach program offers children and adults the opportunity to engage in the process of making opera; to learn about opera’s backstage life, and to experience the excitement of live theatre first-hand.
