Outreach and Education for Children
The Opera Shop is a multi-staged interactive learning experience for young people designed to help make opera accessible, educational, and fun. The program, launched by Opera Boston in 2002, introduces opera to children at their own level, and helps them understand the process of performing opera as well as opera’s narrative and music. The program is primarily geared towards grades 4 and up with a focus on underserved communities where children may have few opportunities to experience live music. The Opera Shop has served students in Roxbury, Dorchester, South Boston, East Boston, Charlestown, Somerville, Brighton, Salem, Foxborough, and Bedford.
The Opera Shop is also available for school residencies, as well as after-school programs and community centers. Recent programs have taken place at the Hurley School in Boston, United South End Settlement House, Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCAs, the Community Music Center in Boston and Salem High School.
